Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

The Class Teacher, Miss Tapfield, and Teaching Assistants , Mr Lonslow and Mrs Allen, welcome you to an exciting year of learning.  Year 1 is where the children’s learning transitions from play based learning, as experienced in Reception, to begin to experience a more formal approach. The children settle into this very quickly as we complete a wide range of practical and formal activities to support their learning from our inspiring and creative curriculum.

As part of our Catholic ethos, the children live, love and learn in the Light of Christ by following the Christian values. This creates a nurturing school environment where children can thrive in their learning.

In Maths, we dive deep into numbers and discover the place value of tens and ones all the way to 50! We follow the White Rose Maths scheme where the children learn through concrete resources which transitions nicely to pictorial problem solving. The final step is abstract thinking where the children give reasons to their answers.

In English, the children learn pure sounds, graphemes, split diagrams and phonemes through the scheme Read Write Inc. Phonics occurs daily and the children are taught how to segment and blend words which prepares them for their phonics screening tests, as well as developing their reading, writing and fluency skills.

In History, the children are currently learning all about Inventions that changed the World. We are exploring who Isaac Newton and William Tritton are and why they are important to our modern day society now.
